Degrees of comparison (adverbs) -степени сравнения наречий образовываются почти так же, как и степени сравнения прилагательных. Наречия образовывают две степени сравнения: сравнительную (Comparative degree) и превосходную (Superlative degree).

Односложные наречия

и early

-er

e.g.  near-nearer                               

        early-earlier

-est

e.g. near- nearest      

        early- earliest

Наречияна -ly

More/less 

e.g. slowly-more slowly      

        happily – less happily    

 Most/least

e.g. slowly – most slowly       

        happily – least happily

 

Исключения:

·         Well – better – best

·         Badly – worse –  worst

·         Much – more – most

·         Little – less – least

·         Far – farther/further – farthest/furthest

 

  • Иногда перед превосходной степенью сравнения используется артикль the, но не всегда.

e.g. This baby smiles the most sweetly.

Write the adverbs in comparative and superlative degree.

4)      Dangerously

5)      Little

6)      Late

   Exercise 2.

Choose the correct form of the adverb.

1)      These dancers dance more gracefully/most gracefully of all.

2)      Kate runs faster/fastest than Jill but she swims more slowly/most slowly.

3)      I drive dangerously but my mom drives even more dangerously/most dangerously.

4)      My band played worse/the worst of all at the concert.

5)      My daughter reads more quickly/most quickly in her class.

6)      This sweater suits you better/the best than the blue one.

7)      Unfortunately I left work later/latest than I wanted.

 

 

 

 

Answers: 1.most gracefully, 2.faster, more slowly, 3.more dangerously, 4.the worst, 5.most quickly, 6.better, 7.later.

 

 

 

 

   Exercise 3.

Complete with correct form of the adverb.

1)      Could you come a little (late) at the weekend?

2)      He dances (well) than I do.

3)      Who drives (carefully) in your family?

4)       Read this book (fast) than the previous one.

5)      This year she communicates even (shyly) than before.

6)      He behaves (aggressively) in his company.

7)       My husband cooks (well) than me but unfortunately he never does the washing up.
