Reduce, reuse and recycle…three “Rs” as familiar to you as reading, riding, arithmetics but it’s the fourth “R” that inspired a revamp of the Johnson family’s lifestyle: refuse.
(Bea) “It is really not that much work if you really stop trash from entering your home…”
That means refusing to buy, refusing to use and refusing to accept anything that would end up in the trash.
(Son) “I would say reduce just don’t really bring anything home, so…”
(Vicky) “You say, you wouldn’t throw anything away?”
Bea started with small changes and now her family of four no longer needs trash service…this is how much garbage they produced in four months.
(Bea) “And this is the trash since October…”
It’s living as close to zero waste as possible.
The term is used in manufacturing where companies strive to eliminate waste.
Here meat goes from the butcher corner to a jar.
(Bea) “Like fish, cheese, chicken, bacon…”
And Bea refills clothes sacks with grains and produce.
(Husband) “I was just afraid that I would be eating a bunch of grain all hour or something all the time”
Husband Scott says the variety has surprised him but the savings made him a believer. The family buys less _vanilla extract_ makes more _ home-made hummus _ and eats healthier.
It started four years ago when the Johnsons downsized from a three thousand square foot home into a space half the size.
They purged everything that didn’t fit, realizing they could live with less.
(Bea) “Three pairs of pants, one pair of shorts, two skirts_muchless_one bra…”
(Vicky) “No cotton balls?”
(Bea) “No”
(Vicky) “No paper towels?”
(Bea) “No” “It’s amazing how much waste you reduce but also how much money you save”
They haven’t given up everything that makes them happy, they’ve simply reduced the number of things it takes to be happy.
(Bea) “I still have make up and people say “why don’t you stop make up?” “If I did, then I would be miserable, and is life really worth living when you’re miserable? I don’t think so…”
What they can’t refuse or reuse, they recycle.
(Bea) “In one week we usually fill just one of these”
And rot, compost bins collect every food scrap in the house.
(Husband) ” There is a bunch of red worms in there and they compost those food waste”
The Johnson family’s zero waste lifestyle, simple as it is, has attracted some detractors too…People who say all the effort that goes into living without waste is like living without …living.
(Bea) “they’re called haters “
The haters surfaced after Bea started the zero waste home blog a year ago. It became a magnet for anonymous attackers, accusing the Johnsons of being too extreme. But for Bea the idea of littering away waste…
(Bea) “I’m doing it for my kid’s future”
